Mary Catherine “Kiki” Jensen

Linda G. Jensen as a “Flapper”

This piece was inspired by my love of Art Deco: simple shaopes, beautiful and often repeated stylized flowers and beautiful Victorian women. The portrait of the young woman in white satin was appropriated from the internet, the beautiful young blond inspired by our daughter Mary Catherine and the full figure inspired by my beautiful wife Linda. That figure was inspired by “Flappers” off the 1920’s - young western women who smoked cigarettes, wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz and flaunted their disdain for acceptable behavior. Linda is extremely kind and loving with a special, beautiful southern style, great love for all, especially animals and replete with a beautiful southern accent. When she was a student at “Ole Miss” her sorority sisters referred to her a “The clean Hippie.” When I met her she dressed beautifully and a little eccentrically, on occasion, she would - like her mother wear a mink stole. Later, she told me that neither she nor her mother knew this has once been a live animal.

…..with Golden Frog

Mihwa Hang: Greenware

I was a visiting artist at Hanyang Women’s University and Kookmin University in Seoul, South Korea for two weeks. Kookmin had 7 faculty in the ceramics program, undergraduate students and 60 graduate students in ceramics.— a huge program. My obligations included Powerpoint presentations on my work, demonstrations sculpting, pottery wheel demonstrations, working individually with students and created 4 pieces for the university’s collection.I created this piece of Mihwa Hang, a model and student at Hanyang. I was provided a studion, the piece was made solid, then holloowed out and then fired and painted. Often, I put something on top of the model’s head; I had two professors suggest a frog, which I was adverse to but arrive one of the professors gave me the background story I went with it. The story was this: mothers tell their young daughters that if they misbehave they will turn into a frog, that is why when you go down to a pond at night you hear a lot of moaning and croaking. Better Behave. HaHa.

Beautiful, Beautiful Woman

Yoga: for a number of years, we thoroughly and benefited from it, then Covid hit and our studio closed. Linda has walked an hour plus everyday since we have been married and I swim in the river and bike long distances regularly. This is an important foundation; our physical and psychological health, our sense of discipline and it also provides and opportunity for enjoyment and great joy. We have excellent health and are very thankful. I have made this comment a number of times over the years, “I was (am) a funny looking guy from northern Wisconsin looking for a beautiful woman from Mississippi. It worked out.

Elizabeth was another one of our favorite students at Armstrong. Full of lie, a beautiful smile and hair is original as it gets - and her hair is alive. What a wonderful personality. Elizabeth was raised by her Grandmother, a devout Christian who recently passed away at 90.

Pink Cupcakes: After the Ride

Pink Cupcake Poster

This sculpture commemorates and honors my experiences biking, one of my favorite things to do. Nine years ago I decided to create a birthday ride - twice my age. The first year I was only 62, and 4 of us rode 124 miles. Last year about 25 riders rode 142 miles. The pink cupcakes and a commemorative gift like a coffee mug are given to each biker after the ride. I always tell young people - you better sign up now because every year it is two miles further. My sister Kathryn and her partner Amy, who are the two people on my left, came from Minneapolis a couple years ago to do the ride.

David Russell

1953 - 2018

THE REAL:

Buddha, Fuzzy, Giraffe, Doppler…..FUZZY

A great friend and a man with a lot of nicknames whom I lost touch with for nearly 20 years. We reconnected when his son Kris moved to Savannahfrom Milwaukee to attend Armstrong, ending up with a Masters degree in Marine Biology from Savannah State University. Dave was a kind and thoughtful man, a chiropracter, a kayaker extraordinaire and into music. His sculpture is the first in a series of miniatures. I gave Dave tthis sculpture and unfortunately a few months late Dave passed away.

Known for saying …..

Famous People Face Jugs

Donald J. Trump

45th President of the United States

“Mistaken”

I thought I was apolitical, and I was until the world went to “Hell in a Handbasket,” whatever that means. Then I realized, at this time, it is imposssible to be apolitical, unless you are dead. This piece was inspired by the tumultuous political world we have been living in: full of chaos, anger and a complete lack of civility. I attended 12 years of Catholic school and Catholicism influenced this piece. The front panel, loosely influenced by the 14 stations of the cross featured Carly Fiorina, Pope Francis I and Ted Cruz — all people that President Trump Insulted. On the back is another panel, influenced by Madonna and Child featuring Ivanka Trump and her two children.

There is a long history associated with Face Jugs — many were created more than 100 years ago by folk potters in the Appalachian Mountains. Basic components include a cover or opening, a handle and a spout to pour from - in this case a mouth. A number of years ago I was invited to be in an exhibition that featured face jugs. That is when I came up with the idea odf doing Famous People Face Jugs. Some of my early ones include Pope John Paul II, George W. Bush, Barach Obama, Donald J. Trump, Ruth Bader Ginsberg and John Lewis, among others.

This was going to be a Garden Gnome for my wife Linda. I started doing some light research and this Gnome meditating kept popping up. Then, I saw images of Donald Trump and morphed the meditating gnome with Donald ….into Donald J. Trump meditating on a mushroom, which somehow changed to Levitating. Using a spring I elevated him about 1/2” above the mushroom …. now, a Bobblebody. What the Heck, I got another spring and made him a Bobble head. Lots of Bobbling going on here. On his head is a gnome hat, $100 bills are in his right hand, dripping rubles from his left hand and under the mushroom is Gnome Vegetation; lichen, mushrooms and other grasses, etc. The title - Donald J. Trump: Levitating on a Mushroom is carved around the base

Mr. Potato Head

Out of the Box, Up & Down, Round & Round & In & Out

The sculpture is motorized and revolves

Mr. Humpty Dumpty

Alternative Title: Your Representatives in Washington D.C. - Mr. Potato Head, Humpty Dumpty, Micky Mouse and a Clown, among others. This piece is inspired by children’s toys. While doing “light” research I cam upon “A Jack in the Box,” and immediately saw it as a “Donald Out of the Box.” This piece is a metphor for the turmoil, or more rightfully “The Mess,” we have created in D.C., the country and the rest of the world. Oooooo, that is negative and I consider myself a person who is positive… But the lack of kindness, civility, willingness to work together for the common good plus the anger and hate as a result of this is disturbing - at best. I hope those children’s toys can get us out of this - it is our best hope. It is not going to be the politicians.

“In My Self Defense, I Was Left Unsupervised”

Not sure where I was going when I started this piece, one of my favorite ways to work … an act of faith. I began with the idea of using Donald Trump and a Gnome ….. again, what is wrong with me? Soon I was incorporating children’s toys and accoutrements into the piece. Pacifier, baby rattle, a spinning top, yellow duckies, etc. amd instead of a Blue Bird of Happiness emerging from his beard Donald J. Trump emerged. He is sitting on a mushroom that sprouted hundreds of colorful stems. The three titles are important , my favorite being…

“In My Self Defense, I was left Unsupervised”

The motorized sculpture revolves.

Donald J. Trump & Kim Jung Un

Two Gnomes Fooling Around with ICBM’s

When my good friend Todd Norris, an A.R.T. Practitioner Extraordinaire and an ardent supporter of Trump, visited my studio, he said ‘Why don’t you do a sculpture of Trump sitting on top of Kim Jung Un?” That is something I had never thought. That is where I get many of my best ideas, a quip made by someone visiting my studio. Replete with ICBM Gnome Hats, naked Trump is comfortably seated in a full lotus position on the back of Kim Jung Un as a flying tortoise with Trump’s bottom showing.

Linda said, “Do you have to show his bare bottom?” “Yep, that is what he is showing.”
